The Museum's world-class vertebrate paleontology collection contains around 1 million specimens of which only a small fraction - 0.02 percent - in on view at any time. The rest is stored behind the scenes in spaces like the aptly named Big Bone Room. Most of the bones are too large or too fragile to be displayed, but they're available for research purposes to paleontologists who come to the Museum from around the world.
