Extinct or not? Around 65 million years ago, about half of Earth's plant and animal species became extinct. Among these animals were all the non-avian (non-flying) dinosaurs, including Tyrannosaurus rex and Apatosaurus, as well as the dome-headed, armored, and duck-billed dinosaurs. What happened? We know that a comet or asteroid hit Earth around that time, and its effects were deadly for life on land and in the ocean. Massive volcanic eruptions and changing sea levels may have also been to blame. Of all the dinosaur groups, only birds survived.
