About Wampum Jewelry: Wampum comes from the New England region of the North Atlantic. The sacred shell beads and jewelry are used by Woodland tribes. The white and dark purple shell beads are made from the quahog shell. Wampum is traditionally used for marriage and other ceremonies. Wampum records historical events and treaties in Wampum Belts and beaded strands. It was not used as a currency until colonists came to the shores of the Atlantic and realized how much wampum meant to the Eastern Tribes and began to use it as an exchange for items, wampum soon became Americas first currency and was used as currency for 250 years.
