In 1869, a group of New Yorkers met in the home of Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. to found the Museum. His son, the future president, was just ten years old and would one day become a pioneering conservationist and lifelong contributor to the Museum.
Roosevelt was a teenager when he made his first donation to the Museum consisting of 1 bat, 12 mice, 1 turtle, 4 bird eggs, and the skull of a red squirrel.
