Helenite is a gemstone created from the volcanic rock of Mt. St. Helens' May 18, 1980 eruption. The stone was discovered when workers used acetylene torches to recover buried equipment. Volcanic material traveled from 10-20 miles underground, after which it was fused under high pressure at 2700°F in the US. Helenite's Forest Green color comes from naturally-occurring iron. Swiss Blue gets its color from cobalt, Ruby Red from gold, and Twilight lavender from manganese.
