From the Designer:
This porcelain iceberg pendant necklace is inspired by both the Gems and Mineral Hall and the current Nature's Fury exhibit. While touring the museum to gather inspiration for this project, Senior Scientific Assistant, Jamie Newman, described how minerals form in response to environmental variables such as pressure or temperature. Imagining how gems and minerals are formed led me to wonder what other objects in nature have a similar beginning.
The current exhibit, Nature's Fury was moving, inspirational, and terrifying. In demonstrating the power and scale of natural disasters and how they affect our planet, I was immediately struck by a feeling of being very small. One cannot help but reflect on how human time and space is insignificant on the scales set by nature.
Icebergs stood out as an awe-inspiring combination of the natural beauty of minerals and the grandeur of nature. I was especially inspired by blue icebergs which are formed from freshwater snow that has undergone tremendous pressure over immense spans of time. Similar to the way minerals are formed; pressure, impurities, and time reveal familiar facets, colors, and lusters.
With this necklace, I hoped to recreate the qualities found in both minerals and ice.
