Ammonites are an extinct group of marine invertebrates. They are closely related to living octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. The name "ammonite” is derived from the Egyptian god ‘Ammon’ who was often depicted with ram's horns.

These specimens from Madagascar are known as “A-Grade” in the industry for the beautiful crystal formation within the chambers separated by walls that grew like rings on a tree as the animal grew.

In medieval Europe, These fossils were believed to be petrified coiled snakes, and were called "snakestones" or "serpent stones.” It was believed that they had healing powers. Ammonites from the Gandaki river in Nepal are called “saligrams” and Hindus believe them to be a manifestation of Vishnu.

This specimen is either a Cleoniceras or Desmoceras and was collected from Madagascar. It was deposited during the Lower Mid Cretaceous which is aged between 110-120 million years old. It has been sliced through the center and polished to reveal the intricate chambers that have been preserved in calcite and limestone. Stand included. (Note: stand may require adjustment to secure specimen.)
