In the late Tertiary period, blankets of rainforest surrounding volcanoes were plentiful throughout Indonesia. After Volcanic eruptions, these trees were buried by ash and lava eliminating any microbes that would rot the wood, Over time, the wood molecules were replaced by silica?rich minerals such as chalcedony, quartz, calcite, opal, and jasper. The beautiful colors are a result of trace minerals such as manganese and iron. This wood from Indonesia is more than 200 million years old.
