Pterodactyl" is the generic word many people use to refer to two famous pterosaurs of the Mesozoic Era, Pteranodon and Pterodactylus. The name Pterosaurs comes from the Greek word, meaning “wing lizard”. The existed mainly during the late Triassic period to the end of the Cretaceous period, 228 to 66 million years ago. They are the earliest vertebrates known to have evolved powered flight. They varied in size greatly, but generally they were very large. Most species would have a wingspan of 33-36 feet and could weight up to 550 pounds, making them rather light compared to their size.
