Since the 1960's we have known that there is a rough correlation between brain size and body size in vertebrates. What this relationship means is that, as it develops, the brain keeps in scale with the rest of the body. But it's also frequently pointed out that there are some significant departures from this general relationship. Thus it has long been known that both dolphins and humans have bigger brains than would be predicted from their body sizes, based on the overall trend among mammals.
