Handwoven Dancer Basket
Baskets woven in Rwanda carry their own symbolism. Friends give them to celebrate major life events and they are proudly displayed as symbols of wealth of friends, family and life. The bold, pointed pattern on the Dancer basket conjures the full, sharp movements and brilliant costumes of the East African dancers who tell stories and pay tribute to life through their dancing.
About the artist: This basket was woven by Illuminee. She has a husband and three children. Before joining her cooperative she was alone, with no friends. After joining she has made many friends. She loves working in her weaving cooperative because it makes her smile to work with a team of other weavers.
