In 1869, a group of New Yorkers met in the home of Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. to found the Museum. His son, the future president, was just ten years old and would one day become a pioneering conservationist and lifelong contributor to the Museum. The Museum has grown a lot since 1869, and still continues to grow today. The world-famous Rose Center for Earth and Space opened in 2000, and the Museum's newest halls explore the diversity of life on Earth and the "family tree" of human evolution.
