African Cathedral Friendship Basket
The covered cathedral basket is intricately woven by craftswomen in Rwanda. It is made of dyed sisal fibers, sweet grass and silver metal threads. Also known as the agaseke basket, it is commonly stuffed full of dried foods and given to friends or family on special occasions as a token of love. Fair Trade product.
About the artist: The weaver of this basket is Seraphine. She has seven children. Now that she has income, she is able to take out a loan to build a new house for her family. Weaving provides her with equality in her marriage, which is uncommon in rural Rwanda. She shares everything with her husband, making all decisions together.
