in 1869, a group of New Yorkers met in the home of Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. to found the Museum. His son, the future president, was just ten years old and would one day become a pioneering conservationist and lifelong contributor to the Museum.

As a young boy, Theodore Roosevelt was an avid naturalist devoting much of his time to the study of birds and insects. As an adult explorer and conservationist, his contribution to the Museum's collections are found in the Hall of North American Forests and elsewhere.
